Garmin today added the Edge 800 to its line-up of GPS-enabled bike computers. The new device features a 2.6” color touch screen. The basic version will cost $449 without add-on such as heart rate monitor or topo maps.
The Edge 800 offers new mapping options such as route planning on the free desktop software Garmin’s BaseCamp and BirdsEye Satellite Imagery ($30 for the US).
The Edge 800 tracks speed, distance, time, GPS position, elevation, calories burned, climb and descent. It incorporates a barometric altimeter to pinpoint changes in elevation. The device can also sync wirelessly with compatible third-party power meters as well as Garmin heart rate monitors and speed/cadence sensors.
Several map datasets are available as options. For the great outdoor, TOPO U.S. 24K DVD or microSD card offer detailed maps comparable to 1:24,000 scale USGS maps, featuring terrain contours, topo elevations, summits, routable roads and trails, parks, coastlines, rivers, lakes and geographical points. Garmin also has the optional City Navigator for turn-by-turn navigation.
